A Magnetic Coil

What Is a Magnetic Coil?

These coils are one of the simplest forms of electronic components and provide inductance in an electrical circuit. An electric current is passed through the coil wire to generate a magnetic field or external magnetic field through the interior of the coil, which will be used to generate an electromotive force in the conductor. A magnetic coil is made up of a core and windings, and these have a primary winding and a secondary winding.

How a Magnetic Coils Function

The major purpose of the coil is to create a magnetic field that becomes stronger with an increase in the number of turns. The magnetic field strength is proportional to the amount of current flowing through the field. With the act of adding more current, the force of the magnetic field will result in an increment. All wires can produce a magnetic field when current passes through them. Using the technique of winding and looping the wires, one can increase the power of the produced magnetic field and store the energy.

When electricity passes through a circuit, it flows through a resistor and into a magnetic coil. The magnetic coil maintains proper stability and initially resists the current flow. However, as the current rises, the magnetic coil later allows the current to pass through. When the current is removed, the electric coil acts to maintain the flow and resists the change, thus allowing the electricity to continue to flow even when the current has been removed.

The number of coils determines the inductance of the coil, as more coils result in a higher inductance rating. The core also affects the inductance as some have an iron core or a ferromagnetic core. The cross-sectional is also proportional to the inductance, and the length of the coil affects the inductance as the shorter the coil equals greater inductance.

Types of Magnetic Coils

The magnetic coils vary by how they will be used. Despite the different types of magnetic coils, they all have electric current that interacts with a magnetic field.

Bobbin Wound Coils

These contain an electromagnetic wire wound around a core made up of plastic or a bobbin. These types of cores come in various sizes. In addition, bobbin wound coils can be molded, taped, or impregnated in a manner that enables them to be used for various medical devices, automotive applications, relay, and sensing.

Toroidal Coils

This type of coil is used for inductors and transformers. They contain a coil formed by wrapping a wire around a circular core that is open in its center. This contained shape of the toroidal coil enables it to have a magnetic containment of the field, thus limiting the amount of leakage of the field outside the coil. These coils are used in various industries, including audio, power supply, and transportation applications.

Self Supported Coils

Self-supported coils are used when there is limited space and no room for a bobbin or core. Therefore, these coils can be placed closer to the metal in the circuit and have greater magnetic capabilities. Some of their application areas include magnetic locks, audio circuits and for clutches.

Magnetic coils are used in the automotive sector, including ignition systems of internal combustion engines for vehicles such as sports cars. Imaging equipment powered by high voltage coils, such as x-rays, uses magnetic coils. Radio transmitters and flashing lights contained in cameras and strobe lights use magnetic coils for proper functionality. Finally, electrical transformers and vacuum tubes also use magnetic coils.
